Colnago Dream

So I decided that rather than spend $3-4k on a new bike, I'd assemble one for a quarter of that cost. I've been riding a Fuji Team I picked up at Performance Bike for $1000 a little over 2 years ago. Its been a great bike, but I feel like I've outgrown it after 5k or so miles. I listed it on my buddy Craig's website for $750 and generated a lot of inquiry but nothing legit. I also had a guy who said he'd give me $650 if I could wait a few months. I decided to throw it on Ebay with a BIN of $850. Some dude in Cali scooped it up 19 MINUTES after I listed it. No Shit.

Let me say now that I enjoy searching for deals online. This usually involves taking advantage of people who either don't know what they have or are desperate for $$$. Long story short, I started assembling the pieces for my perfect bike.

2 weeks post-op

The surgery finally happened March 18th. The cast came off to reveal a shriveled arm and a well healed incision about 5 inches long.

The intial radial head fracture caused damage to the capitellum that was not visible in x-rays or in the MRI. The radius impacted the capitellum, which is essentially just cartilage. This resulted in a flat spot in the cartilage, possibly some bone fragments floating around, and lots of popping and grinding. After multiple rounds of cortisone injections and lots of pain during and after rides, my doctor and I decided it was time to go in and fix it.

My doctor performed a loose body removal and debridement. He also shaved the capitellum down a bit and drilled some dimples in the radial head to promote new cartilage growth. He said that there was significant arthritis in the area of the initial fracture, and a significant amount of fluid and scar tissue. He cleaned it all up and added a synthetic material made by the Gore-Tex company to replace the damaged and removed cartilage.

So I think I'm going to document my rehab from elbow surgey here. Surgery is March 4th, 2009.

Tri-PTC

This was my second triathlon. Here are the results

The swim went fairly well. The lake was full of long, itchy grass. It was constantly wrapping around my arms and neck and I could feel it with my feet and knees as I swam. I started off swimming freestyle but almost immediately switched to breast stroke as I could not see more than 8 inches under water. Very different from swimming in the pristine Gulf of Mexico. I had a hard time getting a good breathing rhythm at first, but I found my pace about a quarter of the way through the swim. I could probably shave a minute off my time swimming freestyle, but I would have been out of gas.

The first transition went fairly well, as did the bike leg. My heart rate was high for the first few miles but it eventually leveled off. It was cool and drizzling rain on and off. The wind was gusty at times but never really bothered me. I haven't ridden my road bike much lately and it didn't feel like it fit like it used to. My track bike has an entirely different geometry and I've been spending a lot of time on it. I averaged 19.3 mph and finished 23rd out of 62 in my AG

The second transition sucked. I tried to swing my leg over and ride in side saddled so i could jump off at the last second. It didn't work. My jello legs failed me and I took a nice chunk of carbon out of my top tube. I also couldn't find my head band

The run went very well for me. 9:09 pace was actually great for me. That's almost a minute better than my 5k pace with fresh legs from a couple of months ago. I am confident I can knock at least another minute off of that. I found my pace about a mile in and finished strong, not out of breath. I guess I need to push harder next time.
